The Pirates of Penzance bustle gowns - Scottish Opera

The Pirates of Penzance was designed by Jamie Vartan and set in the 1880s. I worked primarily on the ladies chorus and principal outfits (13 in total). Each character had a day and evening costume.

The ladies daywear was a bustle gown. This consisted of: bustle cage, petticoat, corset, skirt with swag and bow, and jacket. My tasks were to help make some of the costumes for the first fittings, take notes during fittings, do alterations and finish the costumes.

The bustle gowns had beautiful construction techniques applied to them. This included: sunray and knife pleating, lace work, lace-edged frills, piped edges, a variety of collars, frilled cuffs and pattern matching.
