About me

For over 20 years I have been making clothes from patterns in my free time, as well as modifying items from charity shops. Having had no formal training I decided to undertake the NCFE Fashion and Clothes Making course at Sheffield College. I completed the course summer 2009. I dedicated the first year to making items from patterns that were more challenging than clothes I’d made previously. During my second year I began to learn pattern drafting - creating my own tight fitting bodice, sleeve and skirt block. From these blocks I made a number of dresses and skirts.

I particularly enjoy making vintage inspired clothing. In my spare time, when I’m not sewing, I also keep a close eye on eBay for vintage patterns and retro fabric to inspire me. I’ve also been building up a reference library over the last 5 years to further motivate me and to inform my design decisions. The library consists of books on general sewing, fashion and fashion designers, vintage fashion, costume design and creation and vintage magazines.

My education and work background prior to costume making includes a HND in Graphic Design, a BA (Hons) in Surface Pattern Design and an MA in Design Innovation Strategy. I also worked in design and development for an e-learning company called DESQ for eight years. For further information please download my CV.
